Awesomely Weird Alibaba Electric Vehicle of the Week: A $500 self-balancing one-wheeled dorkmobile

I love electric vehicles as much as the next guy, and I’m particularly enthralled with personal electric vehicles. You know, the kind built for just one person: electric bikes, electric scooters, electric rideables, and such. I like to think I’ve embraced some of the more oddball designs out there, though I’m not sure I’ve faced anything as nutty as this self-balancing seated electric scooter.

But as seems to be the theme with this weekly column, I’m ready to jump in with both feet on what is most certainly one of the more unique Awesomely Weird Alibaba Electric Vehicle of the Week finds this year.

Nissan announces prototype facility for solid-state batteries, plans for EV integration in 2028

During a livestream out of Japan this morning, Nissan Motor Company unveiled plans to bring laminated solid-state batteries to market by 2028, beginning with a prototype production facility. The decision is part of Nissan’s “Ambition 2030” strategy, which will now include plans to launch an EV powered by solid-state batteries in 2028.

Japan’s heavyweight motorcycle manufacturers known as the Big Four have unveiled a new electric motorbike battery swapping program called Gachaco. But what Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki haven’t come right out and said is that instead of the highly anticipated innovative new motorcycle battery standard, it’s looking a lot like a blue version of Gogoro.

Porsche proves the benefits of V2G technology by pooling its EVs together to help stabilize electrical grids

Porsche AG is testing the possibilities of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology in its EVs, but taking it a step further. Rather than just deliver EVs like the Taycan that can supply energy back to the grid rather than just pull from it, Porsche has run a V2G pilot program that utilizes “swarms” of EVs whose high-voltage batteries are pooled to help keep the local electrical grid stabilized.
