DOE, Stanford researchers bring “dead” lithium batteries back to life

The lithium-ion batteries found in most modern EVs and hybrids tend to lose energy capacity as they cycle (get charged, get spent, and get re-charged). That happens because small bits of lithium can be cut off from the battery’s electrodes during the charging process. But, a team of DOE and Stanford scientists say they’ve been able to make this “dead” li-ion reconnect, partially reversing the unwanted loss of energy capacity and extending lithium battery life by 30%.

Sony may actually build their concept EV – forms “Sony Mobility, Inc.” and shows SUV variant

Sony brought another surprise to CES this year, revealing an SUV version of their VISION-S concept EV which they showed off at CES 2020, and announcing the formation of Sony Mobility, Inc.,” a new company to focus on mobility and EV efforts.

Even better, Sony explicitly stated that they are “exploring a commercial launch” of their VISION-S concepts, making this project seem more real than ever.

Lightning eMotors unveils its new Lightning eChassis for purpose-built commercial EVs

Fleet EV developer Lightning eMotors has unveiled a new rolling chassis, purpose-built for Class 4 and 5 commercial EVs. The proprietary Lightning eChassis can support 1,500 lbs greater Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) on average compared to other commercial vehicles in the same class. With the debut of its new eChassis, Lightning eMotors has claimed the title of the first commercial EV manufacturer to offer both purpose-built trucks and electrified conversions of legacy OEM platforms.

Tesla Supercharger network is now ‘officially’ in all 50 states with public Hawaii station

Tesla announced that it installed a new Supercharger station in Hawaii, which means that the Supercharger network is now “officially” in all 50 states.

I say “officially” in quotes because technically, there was already a station in Hawaii, but there was a big caveat.

Denmark PM wants fossil-free flights by 2030

Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said she wants to “make flying green” in an ambitious New Year’s speech that included a commitment by Denmark’s government to make domestic flights fossil fuel free by 2030 – how the country will achieve that goal is still in question.

Panasonic turns to JB Straubel’s Redwood for recycled battery materials to supply Tesla Giga Nevada

Panasonic announced that it is going to purchase copper foil produced from recycled materials by Tesla co-founder JB Straubel’s Redwood Materials for battery cell production at Gigafactory Nevada.

The materials will end up in Tesla vehicles – going full circle.
